Doordash is a food delivery service. They provide a red PEX card so that you can pay for food at almost any restaurant. Couriers that work for Doordash are called Dashers. Doordash orders vary between being prepaid to order and pay with the red PEX card. The orders could be prepaid to orders at Taco Bell, so they vary quite a lot. However, they claim that 96% of their customers tip, which is very high. When someone delivers you Taco Bell, they may be more inclined to tip you since they know there is no other way to have it delivered.
The advantage of food delivery is that drivers drive less miles, can use any car, and also be 18 and above. Rideshare services require drivers to be 21 and over with a minimum of 1 year driving history.
Introduction to DoorDash
Like Postmates and Caviar, Doordash let their Dashers walk or ride a bicycle. They claim that their algorithm only allows certain orders for walking or biking couriers. Below are the different types of transportation a Doordash Dasher can use:
- walking
- bike
- motorcycle
- car – any
Like Postmates and Caviar, DoorDash allows Dashers to schedule their hours in any given week. However, Doordash also allow Dashers to sign on whenever they like, assuming there is demand. There is always a cap on how many Dashers are online at any given time to ensure a base level of earnings. If there is little demand, unless you are scheduled, you will not be able to sign on to DoorDash. If there is some demand, you will be given an option to instantly schedule yourself, typically up to the next half hour. Lets say you start at 5:20, then you will be “scheduled” until 6pm. You can work more than that, but only if the Doordash system allows you to schedule beyond 6pm. During peak times, you may be able to find another block right at 6pm until 6:30. Doordash may change their availability as the night goes on so if you really want to work, you can try again later.

Online DoorDash Orientation
Once you finish your Doordash Dasher application, you will be asked to complete an online Doordash Orientation Session. This is to teach you about the DoorDash service and Doordash Dasher app. They will go through various slides about how to accept a Dasher request, how to place an order at the restaurant, how to pay for the Doordash order, and how to delivery the Doordash order. The Doordash orientation will also show you how to schedule your dasher shifts and how you will get paid by DoorDash.

Online DoorDash Orientation Quiz
Once you finish the online Doordash orientation, you will be asked to complete a quiz. Most of it is pretty easy but here are the questions in the Doordash orientation quiz. They may have changed the Doordash Orientation quiz since then so don’t count on this to help you answer the quiz.
Once you finish the quiz, Doordash will process your application. They will run a background check and driving record check on your account. It will take about a week for them to finish processing your application. They finish processing your application, you will get an approval email.
DoorDash Approval
Once you submit all your information, it should only take a few days to clear the background check. I had an issue with my drivers license in that I had just moved states so I needed to provide a copy of my old drivers license. Once I resolved the license issue, I was approved within two days.
Once you are approved, follow the instructions in the above screen (yours will be different, so make sure to do a screenshot of it and they may not email you this information) to get your insulated bag.
In-Person Visit to the Doordash office
Once you finish the online Doordash orientation session and Doordash finishes your background check, you would be invited to go into their local office and pick up the insulated bag and the red PEX card. If you haven’t received an email saying “Welcome to DoorDash,” don’t visit the office since you’re Doordash account would not be approved yet. Wait for the approval email from Doordash before going into the Doordash office.
