This post is broken out into two sections. The first section is a comparison of a few key topics between the two rideshare services. The second section highlights differences between Uber and Lyft.

General Comparisons:

Here are some general comparisons between Uber and Lyft.

Here are some specific breakouts of Uber and Lyft that distinguishes them from a driver’s perspective.

Lyft (Friend With A Car)

In addition to making money driving, there are many other ways to make money. Passenger referral bonuses can be a sizable portion of your weekly income. If you are a good enough driver, you will be invited to be a mentor which can boost your weekly income. The driver community is amazing and drivers tend to help one another and watch out for each other. It is also great to see the transition from new driver to seasoned driver to mentor.

The passengers also tend to be nicer, friendlier and more talkative than Uber passengers. Many Lyft passengers say the same about the drivers. Also, passengers have the ability to tip but they can’t on Uber (except on UberTaxi).

Lyft online support through the Lyft Contact Portal is much better than the older email support but response time can vary widely. For simple issues, it can be a matter of a few hours but some more complex issues like payment and bonus payouts can take a few days.

UberX (Your Personal Driver)

You have the biggest potential to earn money on UberX but beware of stiff competition because there are many other drivers in every market. At times there can be high surge pricing that can be very lucrative. However, there are just too many drivers most of the time. Uber local support email is available in select markets and generally replies faster than Lyft support in SF, but the Uber representative helpfulness leaves something to be desired. Uber now has a live chat option which is much faster than email and since they are live, you can keep asking questions until you get the right answer. At times, it can be difficult to get your Uber hourly guarantee.
