Rideshare Insurance Options For Uber and Lyft Drivers in 50 States
Last year was a big year for personal auto rideshare insurance coverage for rideshare drivers. In 2014, almost no insurer would offer ridesharing insurance explicitly but due to legislation in multiple states, large insurance companies have built specific ridesharing insurance policies or riders on existing policies to insure Lyft drivers and Uber drivers.
The Big Rideshare Insurance Issue
The ridesharing insurance issue comes from the fact that rideshare is considered “for-hire”, therefore considered to violate personal auto insurance terms of conditions. Uber and Lyft both carry their own commercial insurance but the problem is that the ridesharing insurance is not primary in some instances. The “grey area” is when you are online with Lyft and Uber but with no passengers in the car. Many are calling this “period 1” ridesharing insurance coverage. There are some ridesharing insurance that covers Period 1, but most of them do not, which means you will need to rely on Uber and Lyft’s commercial insurance for coverage. This often comes with a large deductible and it also does not cover collision damage to your car.
Many personal auto insurance companies won’t even cover you during “Period 1” so that leaves Lyft and Uber drivers at risk of covering the accident out of pocket. The current status quo was to tell your auto insurance company that you weren’t on Lyft or Uber, which is unfortunately a crime. However, there are now options for drivers in many states.
Rideshare Insurance For Uber and Lyft Drivers
The great news is that drivers in 44 states now can get personal rideshare insurance. Many rideshare insurance claim that it will add about $20-$40 a month to their premium, which isn’t bad for the increase risk of our rideshare activity. I have listed all 50 states, even though Uber only operates in 46 of those states. I have also listed if there are rideshare insurance in every state. [Currently, there is one rideshare insurance company in Ontario, Canada that is insuring Uber drivers. Scroll down to the bottom to see who it is.]
State Farm and Liberty Mutual will not cancel you as a rideshare driver, but in most states they won’t cover Period 1 explicitly, unless they have a new ridesharing insurance policy or rider. There are other personal rideshare insurance companies that will not cancel your policy if you are a rideshare driver, but won’t cover you for Period 1.
What if it is a No next to my state?
I have done some research for the last few weeks and for the states with no rideshare insurance, I wasn’t able to find any insurer that will write a personal rideshare insurance policy or rideshare endorsement for rideshare drivers in that state. If you find one, leave a comment below to say who was willing to insure you.
Here is the link you can sign up with to get notified as soon as a rideshare insurance policy becomes available in your state:
