Lyft Rideshare Prices Drop by up to 20%

For the past few weeks, Lyft has been employing discounted rides during non-busy times, like the middle of weekdays and some daytime hours of the weekend. The discount is called Happy Hour and can either be 10% or 25% off of your ride. This directly affects drivers earnings as they will go down by the same amount. This is the opposite of Prime Time Tips where your fare will go up.

Now, Lyft will be temporarily halting the Happy Hour promotion and lowering prices in some markets by up to 20% and during this time, Lyft will be taking no commission on any rides. The discount is coming directly from Lyft so drivers will only see the increased demand. Some cities, such as Boston, have seen the ride cost drop very slightly so this equates to our earnings going up by 20%. Its a win-win for both the drivers and passengers.

Here was the email outlining this new program:

With beautiful weather on the way, we’re stepping up to continue making Lyft the best transportation option for the spring crowds. To keep you busy with ride requests to festivals, ballgames and beyond, we’ll be testing up to 20% lower prices in all markets — and droppingLyft’s commission from 20% to 0%.

The success of Happy Hour exceeded our expectations, growing ride demand and maintaining driver earnings. We’re excited to bring even more passengers into the community, while offering you peace of mind. Instead of Happy Hour at all times, we want to bring lower prices across the board. And at the suggestion of our drivers, Lyft will remove commissions while we test these prices.

We’ll continue reviewing both price and commission structure regularly and let you know of any changes. Look out for another email this week with an exciting product update that will improve your ride experience!
