The great thing about signing up as a Lyft driver is that all of the above items can be done directly through the smartphone app. The same app can handle requesting a Lyft as a customer and also signing on a driver.
First you will need to sign up for Lyft as a customer with your Facebook profile. It will also ask for your credit card information. Once you are signed up, you can then proceed to sign up as a driver. Click the left top button to bring up the menu and click on driver mode. Click on the toggle switch to on and it will bring up the driver application.
The driver application then ask you for your driver’s license information. It’ll then ask for your social security number and to submit to a background check.
Here is what is on the help portion of the driver’s application. It also lists that you need to be at least 23 years old with a four-door (2000 or newer) car in good working condition.
The next part of the application will have you watch a series of videos. They will then ask you to confirm your shipping address for your Lyft welcome kit.
They usually take a day or two to run the background check and review your credentials. Once they approve it, you will get a short five-minute phone interview from a person at Lyft in San Francisco. They’ll ask you a few questions and then if it goes well, they will enable your driver mode on your phone.
The next step is to enable your driver mode in order to find a mentor in your area. Make sure you have your driver’s license, car registration and car insurance with you. You can schedule a mentor session any day of the week from 9-5pm (7-6pm during the summer here in Boston), which is fairly convenient. They ask that you clean your car and clear the trunk before the mentoring session. This process is covered in the next post (see links above)
After the mentoring session, it may take a couple of days to get approved. Once you are approved, you can start driving right away.
After you completed 30 Lyfts, you get an email from Lyft to notify you that they are sending you a package with the pink ‘stashe, car charger and a few other supplies seen below.
I believe you can start driving right away as soon as you get the email, but I waited for the pink ‘stashe before driving. I personally don’t drive with a ‘stashe on. I’m a bit concerned about too much visibility that I am a Lyft driver. It will be up to you to decide if you want to put it on or not, but it is highly recommended by Lyft to do so.
You can complete this entire process in a few days. It may seem like a lot of work but the app makes it very easy.
